Team of the Year Newletter
While every WABTA tournament is a challenge in itself there is another tournament that lasts for an entire season. The Team of the Year is a contest where each team’s weight is combined from all six tournaments. The team with the most weight is awarded two WABTA Team of the Year jackets and two St Croix Avid fishing rods. Bragging rights also go with the awards and this is worth a lot to many teams.
The 2007 WABTA Team of the Year is Leon Luterbach and Darren Luterbach. It was a close contest like always. I thought the difference was this year all the top teams caught fish in the final event. Normally the contending teams would cough up a hairball or two but Leon and Darren were not to be denied. They battled through the pressure and came away victorious. The total weight of their catch weighed 63.60 pounds. In second place was Gene Henricks and Mark Henricks with 62.52 pounds. Also in the hunt were Amy Witzlib and Duane Witzlib with 62.22 pounds. All three teams were close but the chase is almost always close. Rick Hanfler and Greg Dehring lost by the smallest margin of .28 pounds and Amy and Duane also lost two times by the slim margins of .52 and .78.
Leon and Darren will be awarded their prizes during one of the winter meetings and with luck will be available to talk about their wonderful season.
August newsletter
The sixth and final event of the 2007 WABTA regular season was held on August 14th. The Auto Connectionz sponsored the Okauchee event and they were on hand to hand out a dozen gift certificates and to talk about the many things their company does to keep your car or truck operating safely. The weather was nice and the fishing was solid. 45 teams participated and managed to bring 170 bass to the scales.
Ken Darton and Sam Grooms brought 18.78 pounds to the scales and won the $2500 prize. In second place was the team of Lee (no more crankbaits for me) Pauly and Greg Pauly who won $1800 for bringing 17.02 pounds to the scales. Rounding out the top three and earning $1300 with 15.08 pounds was Steve Verduyn and Craig Polka. Dan Huck won the $450 big bass prize when he brought a 5.02 pound largemouth to the final weigh-in.
2nd July Newsletter
The WABTA would like to welcome you to the world of competitive team bass fishing. On July 22nd we held our fifth tournament of 2007 on Lake Nagawicka. It was a warm and wonderful day. Temperatures were in the low 80’s with a slight wind out of the southwest. 52 teams were assembled at 6:00am for the take-off. As the first boats pulled away from the starting boat you could immediately see that teams would be using a wide variety of presentations to try and capture a limit of bass. Some headed in search of the more shallow largemouth bass while others probed the deeper waters for the numerous smallmouth bass. In the end 113 bass were brought to the scales and 112 were released back into the lake by our dedicated release boats.
I believe the WABTA is the best tournament circuit in Wisconsin if not the whole country. Why you may ask well I will tell you. First of all WABTA is a volunteer organization where all members are counted on to help out throughout the season and everyone does their part. Granted some like Matt DeGodt have a bigger part but rarely does any member turn down a board members request for help. Second we offer an 80% payback at the tournament site of all team entries and 100% big bass payouts. The remaining 20% of the entry fees will be paid back at the season ending Classic. Any funds left over from the raffles or the sponsors will also be paid out at the Classic which means we normally pay out 108% of the entry fees. Third we have a great group of anglers who (with a few exceptions) are willing to share some information with each other so we can all catch more fish. Fourth you do not need a blazing fast 20 foot Skeeter bass boat powered by a 250hp Yamaha to compete. This can be proven by the fact that Duane and Amy Witzlib have yet to take a check while Gene and Mark Henricks have now won twice in 2007 while fishing out of a 17’ Alumacraft powered with 50hp Mercury. Fifth everyone is concerned with the image we have. We take extra good care of the fish by using catch and release in the holding tanks and we monitor the oxygen levels of our tanks to make sure they are normally double what the DNR requires. We leave the tournament sites cleaner than when we arrived and we are courteous to the general public at the tournament site and on the water. (It is fun to see how shocked they are with how many fish we can catch on a lake they normally struggle on.) I could go on but I will end on number six. We offer a more family friendly type setting. Have you noticed the five husband / wife teams that compete? And compete well I might add by winning five of the last seven Team of the Year titles. How about the half dozen of the father / son teams? Just check the standing to see how they are doing. Do not forget to include a bunch of brother / brother teams. Over the past few years all of these teams have enjoyed some success. I am not telling you to drop your partner and fish with a relative but I am saying anyone is welcome and they need not feel intimidated. By promoting all of these fine qualities this we should continue to grow. This winter the board will double our efforts to locate a major sponsor who would be interested in working with us in 2008. We (thanks to Ryan Chuckle) have been sending out press releases of all our tournaments to newspapers and potential sponsors. We are hoping to make a promotional DVD of our last Okauchee tournament so be on your best behavior and dress nice. If we all work together we can make a great club even better!
Now back to the Dick Smith’s Live Bait and Tackle Open, which is located off the Interstate and Highway 83 by the way. Becky Smith was on hand to watch the weigh-in, chat with the anglers and she even brought some wonderful raffle prizes as well. Thank you for all you do Becky! Gene Henricks and Mark Henricks topped the charts this week with their six hit limit weighing 13.74 pounds. Gene and Mark have now won twice this year. They might have the second smallest boat in the club but they once again proved size doesn’t matter. They used a variety of lures in a few locations before finding the right balance late in the day to bag their bass and to put another two trophies on the mantle. They have won $3800 in two tournaments and Gene’s first comment was, "great now I have to worry about the 1099." Gene please be quiet many of us are still trying for our first check of 2007. In second place ($1000) was Hans Juech and Ryan Chuckle. Their mixed bag of six fish weighed 13.14 pounds. They targeted aggressive smallmouth early with reaction lures and moved shallow later to catch some largemouth. Rounding out the top three was Al Freiherr and Bob "Big Bass" Bartelt. They won $750 for catching 12.16 pounds plus Bob landed the St Croix Rods Big Bass (4.56 pounds) of the day to earn a bonus $520. It was their first tournament of the year and it was nice to see them back. Overall it was a rather tough day on the water but like always quite a few teams managed to bring in bunch of quality fish.
The team of the year race is on. Leading the race with just one event to go is
- Leon Luterbach and Darren Luterbach 53.70 pounds
- Amy Witzlib and Duane Witzlib 52.28 pounds
- Tyler Nelson and Jason Burnham 49.94 pounds
- Gene Henricks and Mark Henricks 49.10 pounds
- Eric Catlin and Harold "Hop" Petsch 48.50 pounds
- George Artman and Warren Zaren 46.34 pounds
I would not be surprised to see a team further back pass these top six teams to claim the crown. The largest last day comeback was when a team made up over 11 pounds. Okauchee is a boom or bust type of lake so we will have to see who is still standing when the waves settle. Plus in the last 10 years the leading team has held on only three times. So with that thought I want to wish Leon and Darren good luck because you are gonna need it.
There are still openings in the last qualifying tournament for those teams looking to get into the Classic. We look forward to seeing you at the Auto Connectionz Open August 12th on Okauchee Lake.
1st July Newsletter
The WABTA season is in high gear. We completed our fourth tournament July 7th on the Madison Chain. A special thanks to both Jack and Julie Mudgett from Action Marine / Skeeter Boats for sponsoring the event. Even though we were on the famous Madison Chain of Lakes to say the fishing was scorching hot would be inaccurate. The weather however was 90 degrees and sunny. Luckily most anglers were prepared for the heat and we did not have any health type of emergencies. We also need to remember to take extra precautions with the fish. Keep the water pumps recirculating all day and use “catch and release”. Slowly adding ice to the live wells would also be a benefit on the hot days.
Many fish were caught that day and some were very impressive. 15 six fish limits were brought in and 149 total bass were caught. 143 were quickly released by our wonderful volunteer release boats. Rick Szymanski brought a 5.70 pound largemouth to the scales which would normally win Big Bass honors but on this day it only managed a second place finish because Joe Tholl brought in a 5.82 pound dandy. Joe’s fish earned him $510. Dave Zieleski brought a 5.30 pound smallmouth bass to the scales. The anglers who catch the biggest smallmouth and largemouth bass in 2007 will receive a free replica mount from Dan Johnson’s Fishin Fever Taxidermy located in lovely Oconomowoc (262)-569-7491.
Taking home the win and $3000 was Tim Willihnganz and Chris Havey with a very solid 18.78 pound limit. Jason Yeager and Marcus Nejedlo won $1900 for catching six bass weighing 16.98 pounds. Eric Coggon and Jon Wojak rounded out the top three and added $1300 to their pockets when their limit weighed 16.52 pounds.
It is getting to be that time of year where Classic qualifying is creeping into play. Remember the top 25% of each tournament’s teams earns the right to fish in the season ending tournament. Plus WABTA draws two wild card teams and the top two teams from the team of the year standings that had not already qualified also get to go to the Classic.
Speaking of the Team of the Year Standings. Things are mighty close in 2007 with only two tournaments to go.
Eric Catlin and Hop Petsch 45.24 pounds
Tyler Nelson and Jason Burnham 44.90 pounds
Leon Luterbach and Darren Luterbach 44.60 pounds
Amy Witzlib and Duane Witzlib 43.40 pounds
The next four teams need to make up 10 pounds which is easily achievable with tournamets on both Nagawicka and Okauchee scheduled. Normally the leading teams collapse like a house of cards and a team without any pressure charges up to claim the win.
Artmann and Zaren 36.82 pounds
Wolf and Conrad 36.78 pounds
Henricks and Henricks 35.32 pounds
Verduyn and Polka 35.28 pounds
Puckaway Newsletter
The Mollica’s Pub / Dunn’s Sports tournament was held on sprawling but shallow Lake Puckaway June 24th. It was a nice warm day and all 38 teams managed to get some quality rays. I hope all of the 38 teams were wearing some protection. I mean suntan lotion! It was a tough day on the water as only 70 bass were caught. Mixed in with the mainly largemouth bass were a half dozen smallmouth bass. All of our catch was released back into the lake at the end of the day.
“Hometown Hero” Shawn Drew teamed up with Mark Duerr to win the event with 16.50 pounds. They fished the river areas with soft plastics. By pitching close to cover they managed to bring in a nice limit. In second place was Debbie and Mike Simonds. Their top six bass weighed in 15.92 pounds. They concentrated on the shallow weedy areas in the main lake. Rounding out the top three was Chad Siboda and his father John. They caught many quality bass in the main lake slop. Frogs were their lure of choice. They caught bass all day long. Catching the biggest bass was Gary Jacobson who landed a 4.18 pound bass on a buzzbait early in the morning. Gary was fishing a main lake reed bed.
Our next event will be Saturday July 7th on the Madison Chain. Come one come all to the Action Marine / Skeeter Boat Open Tournament.
June 2007 Newsletter
The WABTA held its second tournament the MW Marine / Ranger Boats Open on Okauchee Lake June 3rd. A full field of 61 boats took part in the festivities. It was a fantastic day for fishing despite the threat of all day off and on showers and thunderstorms. For once the weathermen hit the forecast right on the head. Did the rain affect us? Of course not because we are tournament tested bass anglers and rain can not dampen our spirits. Did it affect the bass? Of course not because they were already wet. So it really comes down to who among us can deal with the elements on any given Sunday.
On June 3rd it was Gene Henricks and Mark Henricks (earned $ 2500) who dealt with it the best. Gene and Mark used a variety of soft plastics to pull a limit of six bass weighing 16.60 pounds out of the weeds. They fished weed flats in 4 to 8 feet of water and while they caught bass throughout the day the morning was the best time for their bigger bass. In second place was Pat Pawelka and Rick Szymanski (earned $1900) who also topped the 16 pound mark. They fished the same area as 21 other competitors in what looked like an armada of bass boats. While they caught lots of 15 inch bass on soft plastics they managed to land a few kicker bass to significantly up their weight total. Texas rigged soft plastics was the key presentation for Pat and Rick. In third place with 15.92 pounds was another father / son team Lee Pauly and Greg Pauly (earned $1300). They used soft plastics (yes you read that correctly) to bring in a very profitable limit. It is nice to see Team Pauly is branching out in their choice of lures and presentations. Catching the biggest bass was Wayne Fohey (earned $600). Wayne was using a Senko in two feet of water when the 4.86 pound largemouth brightened his rainy day.
215 bass were brought to the scales and all were released back into the lake by a wonderful group of dedicated release boats. Special thanks to Brian DeGodt who releases fish after every tournament! It would be nice if every team would volunteer to be a release boat for one tournament each season. This work does not get done by itself and the WABTA board of directors could use some help. I do not want to have to go around and volunteer teams so please help us out. The WABTA is a great group and we run top notch tournaments with over 100% paybacks when you count the Classic. To remain on top we need help from the 200 plus members or the current Board of Directors will get burned out and retire. I will get off my soapbox now.
Many large bass are waiting for us on Lake Puckaway. Please join us for the Mollica’s Pub / Dunn’s Sports Open June 24th.
Remember to make your arrangements for the WABTA Classic which will be held in Shawano on August 25 & 26th. Many of us will stay at the Pine Acre motel. Call Debbie at 800-730-5236 for reservations if you are interested.
May 2007 Newsletter
The Wisconsin Alliance of Bass Tournament Anglers (WABTA) held their first of seven tournaments May 13th on Whitewater Lake. The two Sportsmen’s Warehouse locations (New Berlin & West Bend) sponsored the event. Dave was on hand to hand out coupons for their wonderful and well stocked stores.
For the sixth time in seven seasons it was cold with some rain for the first event of the season. With overnight lows near 42 degrees and a southeast wind the fishing was more than a little tough. However it is the same for all 54 teams so at 7:00 am we set off to begin the season.
Tyler Nelson and Jason Burnham caught a six fish limit weighing 16.08 pounds to win the event and $1300. Their initial game plan was to sight fish but they soon realized that the fish pulled off the beds. Did they panic? Well yes they did but only for a moment then they got busy and blind fished near the bedding fish in six to eight feet of water with tube baits to catch the winning weight. Now Tyler can finally afford some new fancy sunglasses, ones without a crack across the lens.
Leon Luterbach and Darren Luterbach took second and earned $1000 with a 15.76 pound limit.
If it seems to you that this father / son team is always getting a check at this event then you have been paying attention. They fished slow and easy to bag a solid limit.
Dale Pavey and Kevin Pavey rounded out the top three with a 15.70 pound limit worth $800.
Ed Sharpe landed a 5.22 pound largemouth to win the St Croix Rods big bass of the day that one bass was worth $540. Ed was fishing a senko slowly in shallow water when the big one bit.
In all 128 bass were caught with 127 being released back into the lake. We hope all 108 anglers enjoyed the day and learned some valuable information to use in upcoming tournaments. The next WABTA event is the MW Marine / Ranger Boat tournament June 3rd on Okauchee Lake.
